Talking Points:
NOW IS THE TIME. Net metering has  fostered industry growth, yet the growing demand for solar will soon surpass the cap on net  metering at the precise moment that Washington is striving to decarbonize its vehicles,  buildings, and electric grid.

● WE ARE TRAILING OTHER STATES IN AN AREA WHERE WE SHOULD LEAD. Compared to industry leading states. Washington slar deployment trails more thana decade behind. Present met metered solar deployment statewide contributes less than 1 percent to the state's fuel grid make up.
THIS BILL IS ABOUT FAIRNESS AND EQUITY. To date, net metering has not included solutions to support multifamily housing, renters, and homeowners with roofs unsuitable for solar. Net metering and  Virtual Net Metering provide a massive opportunity for the State to capitalize on the Federal  government's recent 10-year extension of investment tax credits related to solar energy through  the Inflation Reduction Act.

●  THIS IS NOT COST-SHIFTING. Far from a net cost, net metering is in  most cases a net benefit—for the utility and for non-solar rate-payers.

Sample phone message: This is a message is for Representative xxx. I am calling to strongly encourage you to support net metering and HB 1427. Please continue to expand the net metering program, ensuring that Washington will be a leader in clean energy and will be able to leverage federal clean energy funds to ensure a healthy future.

Congress Extends 26% Federal Solar Tax Credit

Congress Extends 26% Federal Solar Tax Credit

Good news for going solar in 2021- an extension of renewable energy tax credits has been included as part of the Federal Stimulus Package recently passed by Congress. If you’re considering going solar, this Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) is one of the most important incentives to understand.

Originally scheduled to step down to 22% at the end of 2020, the ITC has been extended at 26% for another 2 years.  For 2021 and 2022 you can receive a federal tax credit of 26%, and 22% in 2023 (expiring Jan 1, 2024).  A tax credit reduces, dollar for dollar, any income tax you might owe in a fiscal year.  If you don’t pay enough to recover it all in one year, it carries over into the next year – there’s no cap on the amount that you can claim. Even better - this applies to residential and commercial solar installations.
